Best Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs

I am currently working on the first round of approach disc distance tests. Once I am done with the first batch, I will start posting the data here. With the approach disc spot in my bag, that might be a putter or a specific approach type disc. I am going to let the data tell me what disc my arm(s) should be throwing at specific distances.

I am not sure how far out I am going to test my putt and approach discs

BUT…

There are a few putters of mine that I know I can throw well over 200+ feet so we will soon see.

Not sure if I want to include the zone, envy and other approach discs at these shorter ranges.

They are all in high end plastic and are BEEFY!!!

Until I hit a distance that seems difficult OR a crazy amount of wind, I am sticking to basic putters for these approach tests.

With my putting tests, I included the zone, hex and a couple others but they just fly different than what I am trying to test for right now.

I will consider those more utility approach discs while I dial in my throwing putters.

The wind really does dictate disc selection for me at times.

Right now I have ran discs out to around 200 feet but it gets close to my property line and my neighbors.

Discs coming in fast towards someone elses property is not what I want to have happen.

So far ( knock on wood ), I have been able to keep ALL my discs inside my property but some have come very close.

Overall, I have right around 300 feet of distance to work with on my property.

For the further distances, there is a huge section of blm land where there is a huge 800+ foot spot to test longer shots.

Once my camera setup is ready ( and soon a drone for those killer top down shots ), the longer distances will get tested.

This is the range that is right outside of circle 2 ( c2 ).

Instead of putting, I am doing stand still throws.

This will allow me to “approach” in a smooth shot versus trying to putt from this distance.

These discs are my putters. I have other discs that can be used for approach discs but for now, it is a putter ( putt & approach ) distance test for now.

As I continue through these sessions and rounds, more discs will be added.

Let’s see which of these putt n approach discs can handle my wind ( northern nevada WINDY! ) and terrain ( hills, rocks, desert and sage brush ).

I am thinking that after this range I will start to add more approach style discs like the buzzz, envy and similar approach discs.

There are a few discs that I will be removing including all of my really light weight aviars.

They are so understable and with my wind and this distance, there really isn’t a point in putting them in the tests as I approach 100+ foot distances.

Which Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs Is Best For 80 to 90 Approach Shots?

Since I am only using putters, there are a couple stand outs from what I can tell.

The feel really gets important as the throws get harder and further.

Most of the gummy lighter putting discs will odds are start dropping off and only the full weight putt and approach disc will stay for awhile longer.

Best Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs From 90 to 100 Feet

This is close to the distance to start switching out a few more discs.

Most of these putters are full weight and the only reason why they are being tested.

The limits of a few of my aviars have been met ( to say the least LOL ).

Which Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs Is Best For 90 to 100 Foot Approach Shots?

In the end, I see myself having full weight throwing putters in a premium plastic.

These will also be overstable for the most part but will end up beating in one that can be my anny approach disc

It is fun to test the distance of the base plastic putters.

In the snow and wet conditions they are FAR BETTER than premium plastic.

Champion plastic, high end plastic or whatever you want to call it is SLIPPERY when wet.

They hold up great as far as damage and stability but when it comes to snowy and rainy conditions changes are going to happen.

When it is rainy or snow is falling, my mids and drivers are going to be a gummier plastic and never a premium.

It is hard to hold onto especially once you get done with a 10 round distance session that ends up with you throwing…

250-280 shots depending on discs included in the tests.

I added a couple more discs to these further approach shots.

Most of my approach or mid style discs are in premium plastic and CRAZY overstable.

For one reason, I am at 5500’+ feet in elevation AND I don’t have a BIG ARM just yet lol.

The understable discs like the RUBY is way too easy to flip over for me.

These are meant for smaller arms ( young and old players as well ).

With wind, these lighter weight discs are nowhere near as reliable as I need them.

Wind is something that is a constant here in Northern Nevada.

I started to see a few discs start to really show their ability to hold up in wind.

During this session there was headwind, tailwind and random sideways wind bursts to deal with.

My lighter and understable discs are NOT my winners now that I am throwing approach shots passed 110+ feet.

This has really depended on which direction the wind was going.

At times I had most of the discs pretty dialed in and landing within circle one and a couple circle two grip lock situations LOL.

We are getting to a distance where some of my putters are not going to hang on in this wind.

My more overstable discs are still killin it and I can still manhandle some understable discs to get them where I need them to go.

During these sessions, we just got a ton of rain and there was an insane amount of mud on the ground.

To say that there is zero ground play ( skipping and rolling for example ) is an understatement.

My shallower discs did far better in the muddy sessions compared to the deeper discs.

The deeper discs LOVE to hold onto as much mud and gunk as possible on the underside.

At this distance there are a few things I am changing about my throws.

With my understable discs, I am putting them on far more hyzer than shorter distances.

My overstable discs are really starting to shine.

Honestly I can’t wait for a bit longer so I can play with some anhyzer shots.

When the wind kicks up, I have zero faith in my understable discs EXCEPT for my pa-5 yellow.

Best Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs From 140 to 150 Feet

This distance ( especially in the wind lol ) is giving my lighter weight discs some issues.

They will turn over if thrown too hard and with too little hyzer on my release.

I am still going to keep them in the mix simply because during non windy days, they offer some really fun approach angles.

My beefier discs like the zone and buzzz, they hold great in the wind BUT I need to get a “bigger arm” to really get these things flying their full flight path.

Which Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs Is Best For 140 to 150 Foot Approach Shots?

I am able to get my understable discs to do a full s flight depending on how strong the crosswinds are.

They would never be my go to approach discs unless I have to go right to left on a rhbh throw.

These can come in handy when I am not wanting to throw forehand.

Our wind has been crazy this week AND we ended up getting a couple inches of snow as well.

The thinner profile putt and approach discs are really starting to distance themselves from the basic putters.

The wind will literally take the “glitch” disc and toss it around in the sky like a rag doll.

You should have seen how it behaved when it ran into a small dust devil on my property.

That ended up being the lightest thrown “almost” 300′ shot I have ever made LOL.

The mx-3 is starting to shine the further out I take the disc.

It also does amazing in the wind compared to more domey discs.

There was plenty of wind again during this session.

The lighter discs with a deeper rim did not want to fly or glide at all.

Most of the actual approach discs like the hex for example were able to cut through the wind no problem IF thrown flat lol…

Any issues were due to my release angle PLUS the direction the wind was flying at during each specific shot.

My wind mainly comes from the right side but can change up by the minute and have headwind, tailwind and left to right wind gusts as well.

The further out I go, the more stable I want my discs to be.

If only just for fighting against wind gusts.

Which Disc Golf Putt and Approach Discs Is Best For 160 to 170 Foot Approach Shots?

Some of the discs love the hyzer shot even with a right to left wind ( rhbh throwing ).

The berg is hitting its limit at this distance or rather my arm throwing the berg has started to hit its distance limit.

The ruby discs are insanely easy to throw far.

I release them to the left of the basket on a hyzer and since they are understable, they get a nice full s curve with minimal strength needed.

The envy, ringer gt and the mx-3 will be amazing approach shots once I learn the discs better.
